It was an emotional debate last night at the Merrill High School Library and in the end, the Merrill Board of Education voted to accept the States Mandate and change the long standing policy on Sex Education which means Merrill students will learn about contraception this year.
This new law requires Schools to teach a comprehensive human growth and development curriculum. The classes at Merrill High School will include information about birth control and sexually transmitted diseases. But, The Merrill Board of education went one step further, the board has required that an advisory committee be formed to determine how and when the information will be presented, then, the program can be reviewed by parents at least 45 days before being taught, those who object to the content being taught will have a chance to remove children from the courses.
