Jeff Verdoorn, board president of the Merrill Area Public Schools, has announced that he will step down from his role effective July 31.

In a letter to the MAPS Board of Education and Superintendent Walter Leipart, Verdoorn cited changing job responsibilities as the reason for resigning from the board. His employer recently sold one of its divisions to another company, and Verdoorn has accepted a position with the acquiring firm.

“With heartfelt regret, I am resigning from my position within the Merrill Area Public School Board,” Verdoorn said. “As part of my new employment understanding, I am obligated to devote my full business time and best efforts to my new company.”

The district will post a notice of school board vacancy in the near future as part of its efforts to fill the position as soon as possible.

“I would like to sincerely thank Mr. Verdoorn for his outstanding service to our school district and the entire Merrill area community,” said Leipart. “While we are sorry to see him go, we understand that career obligations sometimes take precedence. We wish Mr. Verdoorn the very best in his future personal and professional endeavors.”

His current term was scheduled to end in 2016.
