Contractor Bid Accepted for Merrill Fire Station

Posted at 7:01 AM

The City of Merrill will have a new Fire Station, the Merrill Common Council last night approved a contractors bid of just over 2.7 million dollars for a new Merrill Fire Station to be built across from the current Federal Post Office. Ellis Stone Construction of Stevens Point was the winning contactor; the new facility will be almost 19 thousand square feet.

The Common Council decided not to take any action on the future of the Lincoln House on South Mill Street in Merrill. After a water main break on the third floor of the building on January 23rd of this year. City Administrator Dave Johnson indicated he had has received a rough estimate of $130,000 to demolish the building, and another $10-20,000 for asbestos abatement.  This is almost an identical amount of money that the insurance company paid for settlement of the damage property. The city purchased the Lincoln House property in 2011 with the dream of rehabilitating the structure. Prospective developers tried and failed to secure special funding to help with the remodeling and updating of the building.

The Common Council has approved the site plan for the Cenotaph Memorial addition and has also approved a special use permit for the Boy Scout Troop 599 to operate a Haunted House at 700 hendrick Street.
