Snow and Ice Removal from Sidewalks

Posted at 4:57 AM

The City Of Merrill has sent out a reminder to all residents regarding snow removal, the ordinance reads;

Section 32-91of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Merrill requires that the owner, occupant or person in charge of property within the City of Merrill keep sidewalks adjoining their  property free and clear of snow and ice (this includes openings for street crossings and ramps). Any accumulated snow and ice must be removed from sidewalks  within 48 hours from the time the snow ceases to accumulate on the sidewalk. Failure to remove such snow and ice will cause the City of Merrill to remove any accumulated snow and ice and bill the owner, occupant or person in charge of the property for the cost of said removal.

Sidewalks must be cleared of snow the entire width of the concrete. If ice remains on the sidewalk, opening for street crossing or ramp after snow is removed, surfaces  must be treated with ice melt, salt and/or sand to eliminate slipping or falling hazards.  Minimum charge from the city for removing snow from a sidewalk or treating a sidewalk for ice is $85.00.

City residents may get a pail of sand to use on their sidewalks from in back of the City Garage at 315 E First Street. Contact the Merrill Street  Department with any questions at 715-536-4222.
