Each Christmas season the Merrill Chamber of Commerce Foundation sponsors the holiday tree lighting at the Lincoln County Courthouse that has become a Merrill tradition. The giant pines a glow in Christmas colors could be seen from nearly every entrance into the community. In recent years the courthouse lawn has lost many of these big trees due to age, disease and the last two big storms that have hit Merrill. Due to this, some changes had to be made to this Christmas season tradition.
But never fear there will be lights this year - a forest of them to be exact! The Chamber has teamed up with Northwoods Evergreen and Wire who is donating 5-6 foot Christmas trees that will adorn the south side of the courthouse lawn. The Chamber is inviting Merrill area businesses, organizations or individuals to Adopt-a-Tree to help them light-up the courthouse lawn.
Adoption is easy to do. When a business, organization or individual adopts a tree they will become responsible for supplying the lights, decorations and the decorating of the tree. The chamber will continue to supply the electricity. Adopters can pick their own tree theme and colors. The trees will be erected on Saturday, November 17 and must be decorated by November 25. Santa will be turning on all the trees with a flip of the magic switch immediately following the Annual Lighted Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 1.
Only proper outdoor rated Christmas lights can be used and any other decorations used must also be rated for outdoor use. The Chamber recommends using LED lights for safety and to save energy on the electricity costs.
