Council Delays Decision

Posted at 6:34 AM

Option #2 for a new Merrill Fire Protection Facility.
The Merrill Common Council met in special session on Tuesday night to discuss the future of the Merrill Fire Department. The discussion included the proposed new location of the facility, it was suggested that the current City Garage site would be a good location. This option was quickly eliminated because of contamination, as the city garage was built on an old landfill.

It was then decided the land across from the Merrill Post Office on 2nd street was the best option for any new Fire Protection Facility. City administrator Dave Johnson indicated the land as actually made up of 3 parcels and the cost of securing the property would be 250 thousand dollars. This is a reduced price for the land, as the asking price was 279 thousand dollar and the owners would cut the price by 29 thousand dollars as donation to the city.

Merrill council members took no action at last night’s meeting, other than move the discussion into closed session to discuss the purchase price and a possible counter offer. The closed session will be held on Monday September 24th before another Special Common Council Meeting.
