Wisconsin Public Health Departments have received notice of federal policy changes for state supplied vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has mandated that vaccines purchased with federal money cannot be administered to insured children or adults, effective 10/1/2012. This policy change will limit Lincoln County Health Departments’ ability to provide immunizations to the community, both adult and children.
Traditionally, our local health department has provided free immunizations to our residents in Lincoln County regardless if they had high deductibles, or part vaccine coverage. This service has provided our community with excellent school-required immunization compliance, and has served to maintain a helpful immune response to diseases. As this policy change goes into effect, the health departments will be restricted to providing state supplied vaccine ONLY to the uninsured, children on Medicaid/Badgercare, Native Americans, or Alaskan Natives. As health departments do not have the ability to bill private insurances at this time, families will instead be referred to their private medical provider for immunizations.
Lincoln County Health Department will continue to vaccinate all children with the flu vaccine or flu mist regardless of insurance both before the 10/1/12 deadline and after for $5.00. We will continue to offer the adult Hepatitis A and B vaccine for $35.00 per shot, and adult Flu vaccine for $30.00 per shot. Due to Pertussis spreading both in the state and county, the Lincoln County Health Department is able to offer Pertussis containing vaccines to all Lincoln County residents for $5.00 per shot.
The Lincoln County Health Department encourages all residents to prepare for the 2012-13 school and flu season. Please contact your medical provider or local health department to assure you and your child is up-to-date on immunizations, and schedule an appointment if necessary prior to the 10/1/12 deadline. The Lincoln County Health Department can be reached at 715-536-0307 to schedule an appointment, answer additional questions about eligibility.
