Merrill Fire and EMS again responded to multiple accidents on Friday, this time on Highway 51 North of Merrill. Rescue crews reported that US Highway 51 is very slippery thus causing several vehicles to roll this morning.
At 08:13 on Friday Merrill Rescue and EMS were dispatched by 911 Lincoln Sherriff, for a one vehicle rollover with unknown injuries, near mile marker 216 on US Highway 51, south of County H, in the Town of Merrill. Merrill’s rescue 1 along with Medic 1 responded initially, upon arrival they found a pick–up truck on its side in the ditch line on the east side of the road, of the northbound lanes. Rescue crews assisted one male out of the vehicle. Rescue crews noticed a gas leak and requested a Merrill pumper to respond to the scene as well. The driver of the vehicle was assessed by paramedics on scene, but he refused transport.
While enroute back to the fire station from the previous accident at about 09:15, Medic 1 and Rescue 1, were again dispatched by 911 for another 1 vehicle rollover, along with Russell Fire, this time near mile marker 220 again on US 51, just south of County J, in the Town of Birch. Upon arrival the med crew found another pick-up truck , again traveling north, this time pulling a 2 bed enclosed snowmobile trailer that had rolled several times across the median and had come to rest on the shoulder of the southbound lanes. Upon arrival Merrill’s medic 1 found 2 patients, who were already out of the vehicle. Rescue 1 and Russell Fire were cancelled, as no extrication equipment was needed. Medic 1 paramedics assessed the patients, one female was transported to GSHC in Merrill, the other refused transport.
Upon arrival back to the station rescue personnel stated that the roads appeared wet, but actually were very icy.
With the new snow and blowing drivers are asked to use caution on the roadways.
