On Tuesday, the official drawing of ballot candidate order was held. Bill Heideman, the City Clerk announced there was only one official candidate for the office of Mayor, William Bialecki and a second petition submitted by John D. Kaufman was disqualified.
Any candidate for the office of Merrill Mayor must submit a minimum of 50 valid signatures in order to be placed on the election ballot. John D Kaufman submitted paperwork with 64 signatures, the Bill Heideman, The Merrill City Clerk disqualified Kaufman as a candidate because 18 of those signatures were not valid leaving only 46 verifiable signatures which is 4 under the minimum. 10 of the 18 people who signed the petition papers were not City of Merrill residents.
While Bill Bialecki is the only official Mayoral candidate on the April 1st ballot in Merrill, John Kaufman has some options according to Heideman. He can run as a write-in candidate, do nothing or file an appeal with the state election commission.
The April 1st spring election in Merrill will elect a Mayor, City Clerk and all district alderpersons.
