Merrill Band Teacher Resigns

In what is being referred to as "Questionable Behavior" with a student, Merrill band instructor Matt Callope has resigned has teaching position at Merrill High School. The school district has turned over the investigation to the Merrill Police department. WJMT talked with Merrill police Chief Ken Neff about this ongoing investigation.

Details revealed, on January 3rd the Lincoln County Dispatch received an anonymous call claimING the Band Teacher was having a “Relationship” with a 16-year old High School student. The caller also contended the wife of the teacher intercepted messages between the victim and teacher.

Merrill Police investigators interviewed the teacher at the high school and the alleged victim in the presence of family members. Investigators also collected electronic evidence and so far, nothing has shown illegal conduct between the alleged victim and alleged suspect.

Allegations of misconduct surface late last week of the “Questionable Behavior” and Callope was placed on paid leave on Friday January 3, 2014, then Tuesday the 27-year old Callope resigned, The Merrill school board has accepted the resignation effective Tuesday night. No charges have been filed in this case as the investigation continues.
